Capillary chemoembolisation of tumors in the treatment of renal cell c
arcinoma with vena cava infiltration (T3 Nx MO V2) is discussed on the
basis of a high risk patient. This patient had been embolized using E
thibloc(R)/Mitomycin C (7.5 mg/10 mg MMC) in combination with 40% gluc
ose as occlusion medium. Fourteen months after embolisation a recurren
ce of upper pole arteries was observed and successfully reembolized us
ing polyvinyl-alcohol. Almost 4 years after the first embolisation, fo
llow-up CT scans demonstrated massive shrinkage of the avital residual
tumor and vena cava thrombus, indicating the effective, minimally inv
asive management of this disease.
