We evaluated magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings of synovial sarcomas
in 22 patients, and the most common MRI findings were oval and well-define
d nodular masses with heterogeneous intermediate signal intensity (SI) on T
1 weighted images (WI), high SI on T2-WI and heterogeneous contrast enhance
ment. A cystic component was seen in 77%, intratumoral hemorrhage in 73%, a
nd calcification in three monophasic sarcomas. Metastases were noted in lun
g (mostly biphasic type), lymph node, and bone. Posttreatment changes revea
led diffusely increased SI on T2-WI and slightly diffuse contrast enhanceme
nt with feathery appearance. Morphology and MR signal characteristics assis
t in synovial sarcoma management. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science Inc. All rights
