This study empirically estimates a multi-product total cost function and ou
tput relationship for comprehensive universities in the United States. Stat
istical results based on data for 184 Bible colleges suggest that there are
both economies of scale and economies of scope in higher education. In add
ition, product-specific economies of scope do exist for all output levels a
nd activities. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.
