This paper reports on a successful application of fluorescent in situ hybri
dization (FISH) with three repetitive DNA probes (ribosomal DNA (rDNA), (GA
TA)(n) and (TTAGGG)(n)) in the chromosomes of Fasciolaria lignaria (Mollusc
a: Prosobranchia: Neogastropoda). rDNA FISH consistently identified four ch
romosome pairs per spread in the three examined specimens. The telomeric se
quence (TTAGGG)(n) hybridized with termini of all chromosomes. GATA FISH re
vealed abundant, dispersed minisatellite regions which were not associated
to the XY sex-determining mechanism as indicated by the absence of a Y spec
ific pattern of labelling.
