A liquid phase esterification reaction between benzyl alcohol and acetic ac
id has been studied using zirconia and its modified forms as catalysts. The
influence of molar ratio of the reactants, amount of the catalyst and time
of reflux have been investigated. The catalytic activity of zirconia varie
s considerably on treatment with SO42-, PO43- or BO33- ions. Sulphated zirc
onia is found to be the most active catalyst in the formation of benzyl ace
tate. The activity of the catalysts in esterification reaction is correlate
d with the surface acidity estimated by n-butyl amine titration.
