Working on real problems and reflecting upon their experiences through the
use of an action learning model encourages a range of professionals to expl
ore the relationship between reflection and action and to take more reasone
d, better informed action in the future. This article describes an approach
to Continuing Professional Development (CPD) which offers postgraduates fr
om a range of professions opportunities to identify, conduct and evaluate t
heir CPD. The development of the programme is outlined and key features, in
cluding learning about learning; personal and professional needs analysis;
action planning and participation in action learning sets are discussed. Th
e ways in which participants have progressed their personal and professiona
l development through their engagement with the activities are cited, using
a number of case study examples. The strengths and weaknesses of this appr
oach are evaluated, together with its potential use as a framework for CPD
by professionals working in further and higher education.
