entration for Salmonella enteritidis in shell and liquid eggs were evaluate
d. For liquid egg samples naturally contaminated with S. enteritidis, pre-e
nrichment in 225 ml of buffered peptone water with cysteine followed by sel
ective enrichment in 10 mi of tetrathionate broth was the superior, resulti
ng in the detection of S. enteritidis in all samples on six of the seven ty
pes of selective agar substrate investigated. This enrichment procedure als
o enabled detection of S. enteritidis in most of artificially inoculated sh
