The transition state is fundamental to modern theories of reaction dynamics
. Although transition-state theory (TST) has been used mainly in chemical p
hysics, it can be applied to any problem that involves some form of transfo
rmation, including half-scattering events such as ionization. In this paper
, we use TST to investigate the competition between direct and chaotic mech
anisms in the ionization of Rydberg atoms in external electric fields.
