Abstract
The crystal structure of the new germanium selenide Ge4Se9 has been determi ned by powder X-ray diffraction. It shows a new feature for this class of c ompounds; corner sharing of tetrahedra via Se-2 dimers with short Se-Se bon ds. Structurally, Ge4Se9 is related to GeSe2 in that the edge-sharing tetra hedra in ambient pressure GeSe2 are split by the introduction of Se-2 pairs .
