QUANTITATIVE-ANALYSIS OF COMPONENTS OF THE COLOR ADDITIVES D-AND-C RED-NOS-27 AND RED-NOS-28 (PHLOXINE-B) BY THIN-LAYER CHROMATOGRAPHY AND VIDEO DENSITOMETRY

A simple and rapid TLC - videodensitometric method has been developed
for the in situ quantification either of lower halogenated subsidiary
colors (LHSC) or of the ethyl ester (EE) in multiple dye samples on th
e same analytical TLC plate. The results obtained by this method were
compared with those obtained by an indirect TLC - spectrophotometric m
ethod and those obtained by HPLC. The total time for the TLC - videode
nsitometric assay of five standards and four samples applied to each p
late was 45 min or less. This method for the determination of LHSC and
EE in D&C Red Nos. 27 and 28 was found to be applicable for use in ro
utine batch-certification analysis.
