Abstract
We present an algorithm for solving the initial value problem on the infini te line for a wave equation arising in the study of long waves at the free surface of water. The algorithm exploits the link between the hierarchy of the shallow water equation and that of the modified Korteweg-de Vries equat ion. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
