Individual monochromators using different materials have been develope
d to achieve maximum exploitation of the beam qualities of modern sync
hrotron facilities. Low absorbing materials have superior properties o
f reflectivity. These materials can also solve the enormous heat load
problem of the high power X-ray beams of third generation storage ring
s. Use of mosaic crystals and tailored defect structures offer novel p
ossibilities of reflectivity as well as energy resolution control.
