A 14 MeV neutron spectrometer suitable for an ITER-like fusion reactor
is conceptually designed on the basis of a recoil proton counter tele
scope method in oblique scattering geometry. To verify the principle a
nd basic performance of the detector concept, preliminary experiments
are made for a prototype detector system, where the detector responses
are measured to 14 MeV neutrons produced from an accelerator deuteriu
m-tritium (DT) neutron source and compared with the calculated ones. T
he comparison results show reasonably good agreement and demonstrate t
he possibility of energy resolution of 2.5% in full width at half maxi
mum for 14 MeV neutron spectrometry. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science S.A.
