The prognosis for Burkitt's acute lymphocytic leukemia (L(3)ALL) in childre
n and adults had long been regarded as uniformly poor because of frequent c
entral nervous system (CNS) involvement and early relapses. During the last
15 years, however, the survival rate has improved in children, with the us
e of aggressive protocols combining intensive induction and consolidation c
hemotherapy and early treatment of CNS disease. The impact of these new app
roaches on the outcome of adult L(3)ALL has also been subsequently demonstr
ated.
