This is a comprehensive review evaluating the use of allogeneic stem cell t
ransplantation as treatment for adults with acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL
). The results of allogeneic transplantation for patients in first complete
remission, with advanced ALL or with Philadelphia chromosome-positive ALL,
are described. The data regarding available preparative regimens and the u
se of peripheral blood stem are presented. The controversies regarding alte
rnative donor transplantation, the variety of stem cell sources available,
and the timing of transplantation are explained. Lastly, the results from d
onor lymphocyte infusions and the future use of immunoconjugates before and
after transplantation are illustrated.
