Alcatel aims for global software development in its switching and routing b usiness. Although there are many good reasons to globally distribute develo pment activities, success is not guaranteed by just opening a development c enter in a low-cost region. The authors summarize experiences and distill b est practices from true global software development involving over 5,000 en gineers on almost all the continents.
