The nature of the rate accelerating and retarding effects of cationic, anio
nic, zwitterionic and non-ionic micelles on the proton catalysed hydrolysis
of desferrioxamine mesylate (desferal), a trihydroxamic acid, has been stu
died by kinetic methods using visible spectroscopy. Characteristic features
of the media and of the desferal in the reactivity behaviour are discussed
. The binding constants of desferal (by hydrophobic or electrostatic effect
s) to the micelle are seen to be related to the nature of micellar Surface.
