Fe(II) and Fe(III) complexes of 3-hydroxybenzaldehyde isonicotinic acid hyd
razone (3-HBINAH) have been synthesized and characterized by elemental anal
yses, magnetic susceptibility, electronic, TR, ESR, Mossbauer and XRD studi
es. The IR spectral studies indicate that nitrogen of azomethine and the ox
ygen of carbonyl group of the ligand participate in coordination in both th
e complexes while giving no evidence for the presence of lattice, or coordi
nated water. The presence of unidentate sulphate, (NH4)(+) ion in iron(II)
complex and Fe-CI bonds in iron(III) complex are also indicated. The Mossba
uer, electronic and electron spin resonance spectral studies and magnetic s
usceptibility measurements suggest octahedral geometry probably with a slig
ht distortion to both the complexes. The X-ray powder diffraction data indi
cate that both the Fe(II) and Fe(III) complexes belong to the tetragonal cr
ystal systems.
