Reduction of aromatic nitrocompounds have been carried out in presence of i
sopropanol and KOH over some metal oxide catalysts, viz.. SnO2, La2O3-SnO2
and La2O3,. Reduction of p-nitrobenzophenone has resulted in the chemoselec
tive formation of p-aminobenzophenone. It is proposed that reduction of nit
roarenes proceed via a mechanism similar to Meerwin-Pondroff-Verly (M-P-V)
reduction of ketones.
