X-ray absorption and resonant inelastic X-ray scattering measurements were
performed on a single crystal of CeO2 near the Ce L-III edge at room temper
ature and at 873 K. At 873 K the inelastic spectrum exhibits reversible cha
nges, which are paralleled by reversible changes in the X-ray absorption sp
ectrum. These changes are not due to chemical reduction of the sample, and
may be indicative of evolution of the structure of oxygen sublattice in CeO
2 at elevated temperatures. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reser
