Abstract
We propose a wide range phase-locked loop (PLL) for 64X speed CD-ROMs and 1 0X speed DVD-ROMs. The proposed PLL has a locking range of 75 similar to 37 0 MHz. A new V-I converter and a differential delay cell are used in a 3-st age ring voltage controlled oscillator (VCO) to reduce jitters. Since the n ew V-I converter has a wide input range of 0.6 similar to 2.5 V, the VCO ga in can be designed to be small. In addition, we propose a new charge pump w hich has perfect current matching characteristics for sourcing/sinking curr ents. This new charge pump reduces the phase offset and the reference spur of the PLL. Implemented in a 0.25 mum, 1-poly 5-metal CMOS process, the wid e range PLL consumes less than 53 mW with a single 2.5 V power supply and o ccupies an active area of 1.3 x 0.9 mm.
