Transverse flux induction is an advantageous possibility to heat thin metal
strip. This technology allows to reach high electrical efficiencies and hi
gh power densities, which lead to small necessary floor space and shout hea
ting time. The successful industrial application of these heaters requires
the solution of the complicated design. Therefore, a concept for the optima
l design of transverse flux induction heaters has been developed. It is bas
ed on the combination of already existing experts know-how, numerical simul
ation programs and mathematical optimisation methods. In this paper the suc
cessful use of the concept is presented referring to the design of an indus
trial transverse flux induction heater for brass strip.
