A novel compact microstrip antenna design is demonstrated. By embedding mea
ndering slots in the antenna's ground plane, it is observed that the resona
nt frequency of the microstrip antenna is significantly lowered, which can
lead to a large antenna size reduction for a fixed frequency operation. In
addition, enhanced impedance bandwidth and antenna gain are also observed f
or the proposed antenna. Details of the proposed design and experimental re
sults of the constructed prototypes are presented and discussed. (C) 2001 J
