The resectability rate of hilar bile duct carcinoma is reported to be varia
ble and to inversely correlate, vith the size of the associated liver resect
ion. In an attempt to reduce the risk of postoperative liver failure, the i
nduction of a hypertrophy of remnant liver by preoperative portal vein embo
lization (PVE) has been proposed. We hereby analyse the results and the tec
hnical aspects of this procedure along with our personal experience.
