The deformation of a granular assembly is studied using mean-field theory.
It is demonstrated that this theory is inadequate in explaining even the mo
st common features of the stress-strain behaviour. The length scale introdu
ced by the two-particle statistics on which the theory is based is question
ed and a new length scale is put forward that is relevant to structures obs
erved in a new analysis methodology. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rig
