The formation of ruthenium chloro nitroso complexes upon treatment of Ru(II
I) and Ru(IV) chloro complexes with sodium nitrite and nitric acid in HCl w
as studied. At 95-100 degreesC, a NaNO2 : Ru ratio of 4 to 12, and c(HCl) =
1-2 mol/l, the yield of the nitroso chloro complexes is nearly quantitativ
e. The mechanism of nitrosation of ruthenium complexes is proposed to invol
ve the reduction of Ru(IV) to Ru(III) by nitrous acid and the reaction of r
uthenium(III) complexes with nitrogen(II) oxide.
