T. Hansen et Ra. Bartsch, The positive correlation between personal need for structure and the mere exposure effect, SOC BEH PER, 29(3), 2001, pp. 271-276
It was predicted that the amount a person is affected by mere exposure woul
d be positively correlated with their Personal Need for Structure (PNS). Fo
rty participants rated unfamiliar Turkish words for pleasantness. As predic
ted by the mere exposure effect, the greater the participants' exposure, th
e more pleasant the words were rated. Participants were also asked to compl
ete a PNS questionnaire. Individual PNS scores correlated with individual m
ere exposure scores such that people who were higher in PNS were more affec
ted by mere exposure.
