New antiplatelet drugs

The antiplatelet action of acetylsalicylic acid is mostly used in vascular medicin. In the meantime two other classes of platelet inhibiting agents ha ve been introduced. Thieopyridines (Ticlyridin,Clopidogrel) have been shown to inhibit ADP induced platelet aggregation with persistence of this effec t for several days after withdrawel. The short acting intravenous Glycoprot ein IIb/IIIa inhibitors considerably improved the management of acut corona cy syndrom. The above mentioned compounds may be applied in combination at least for some days, and heparins are given in addition. Mainly the bleedin g complications are to be ta ken into account especially if patients have t o undergo emergency interventions. Hemodialysis or platelet concentrates ar e recommended to antagonise the antiplatelet effects immediately.
