A pressurised, hot-water extraction (PHWE) method was developed for bromina
ted flame-retardants in sediments. The effect oi extraction time, temperatu
re and pressure on PHWE recovery was investigated, together with solid-phas
e collection parameters (trapping material, length of trapping column, elue
nt composition). The concentrated extracts were analysed by GC-MS. PHWE rec
overies were compared with those obtained by conventional Soxhiet-extractio
n. In general, recoveries were much higher with PHWE than with Soxhiet.
