Endoanal ultrasonography and faecal incontinence. - Endoanal ultrasono
graphy is a new technique which is now irreplaceable in the assessment
of any faecal incontinence. it is easy to perform, unexpensive and we
ll tolerated. It permits detection of anal sphincter ruptures and has
replaced electromyography in most cases. Nevertheless, it only supplem
ents manometry and measurements of distal motor latences of the pudend
al nerves. This is now the basic examination used to select patients f
or surgical repair of the external sphincter.
