The growing number of elderly individuals is beginning to have an impact on
the composition of local churches. Using a national probability sample of
Churches of Christ (N = 753), three hypotheses are tested. An examination o
f frequencies indicates that the program offered most often for senior adul
t members by local congregations is visitation to shut-ins. Results of chi-
square rests reveal that having an organized senior adult ministry greatly
enhances the number of programs for senior adults. Finally multiple regress
ion is used to test a model of factors believed to influence how "elder fri
endly" a local congregation is. The percentage of the congregation over the
age of 65 has little influence. Of greater importance is the amount of mon
ey budgeted for senior adult ministry, as well as the size of the congregat
ion and whether an organized effort to minister to senior adults is in plac
e. Implications for religious leaders and researchers are discussed.
