We report first calculations of transfer-loss probabilities and differentia
l cross-sections performed within the framework of the independent particle
model (IPM) for the process:
O5+ (1s(2)2s) + He --> O5(+) (1S2S2p(4)P) + He+ + e(-)
For the projectile final state there exist three 1s2s2p alternatives, with
the spectroscopic notation P-4, P-2(-) and P-2(+). One of the possible mech
anisms resulting in these final states, which is expected to be dominant at
the lower collision energies is the so-called transfer-loss (TL) process i
n which a projectile Is electron is ionized with the simultaneous transfer
of a target Is electron to the projectile 2p shell. Our TL results for the
production of the 4P, are compared with older measurements by Toth et al. o
btained using the method of zero-degree Auger projectile electron spectrosc
opy (Nucl. Instrum. Methods Phys. Res. B 124 (1997) 413). For both He and H
-2 targets, the energy dependence is reproduced rather well. However, the T
L calculations are smaller by a factor of 2, for the He data and by a facto
r of 20-50 for the H-2 data. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights rese
