We have investigated the population dynamics of image-potential states on t
he clean and hydrogen-covered Ni(lll) surface using time-resolved two photo
n photoemission spectroscopy. On clean Ni(lll) a lifetime of 7 +/-3 fs for
the n = 1 state is obtained. The increasing lifetime when the surface is sa
turated with hydrogen is assigned to changes in the occupied valence electr
