Abstract
Methods of automatic extraction and categorization of information have been developed for more than thirty ye ars without being accepted to any signif icant degree in the community of documentalists and information specialists . Ever increasing amounts of information and the necessity to provide effic ient access to information in information and knowledge management systems currently lead to a resurgence of interest in these methods in a wide publi c, to increased efforts in research and development and new products. This contribution discusses various approaches to intelligent and content-based retrieval as well as automatic information extraction and categorization, a nd presents a variety of commercially available tools and solutions. The co nclusion is that more and more tasks of information and knowledge managemen t will be automated, as tools of automatic information extraction und categ orization will be integrated in the workflow.
