Abstract
The Second Harmonic wave generated with Evanescent Wave (SHEW) technique is first applied to measure the value of the non-linear coefficient, d(33), o f lithium niobate (LN). The result is in good agreement with the known valu e from the literature. We subsequently investigate the second-order optical properties of the near surface of He+-implanted LN and KTiOPO4 (KTP) cryst als. Our results show a rather strong degradation of the non-linearity (app roximate to 50%) in both crystals. (C) 2001 Published by Elsevier Science B .V.
