We present a multiple-scattering method in conjunction with supercell calcu
lations to study the electromagnetic surface states in two-dimensional meta
llodielectric photonic crystals. In the case of dielectric photonic crystal
s with cylindrical scatterers, this method is able to produce surface state
s inside a partial or full gap for p-polarized waves, similar to those foun
d previously by using the method of plane-wave expansion. However, in two d
ifferent systems of metallodielectric photonic crystals we have studied her
e, we do not find surface states. This is true for bath perfect metal and m
etal with a Drude-like dielectric function. The absence of surface states m
ay be attributed to the expulsion of electric field from the surface into t
he homogeneous medium due to the presence of metallic component, making the
formation of surface unfavorable.
