Sb. Marchenko et al., Modeling of the interfacial absorption layer of polystyrene particles by the Langmuir technique, POLYM SCI A, 43(3), 2001, pp. 273-277
Mixed monolayers composed of alpha-(carboxyethyl)-omega-(trimethylsiloxy)po
lydimethylsiloxane (PDS), styrene, polystyrene, and sodium alkylsulfonate (
E-30) in various combinations modeling the interfacial adsorption layer of
latex particles were studied. A change in the composition of monolayers is
accompanied by changes in their qualitative and quantitative characteristic
s (an increase or decrease in the area per molecule of PDS and the absence
of the transition plateau between the liquid-expanded and liquid-condensed
monolayer states). The obtained results made it possible to explain the obs
erved nonmonotonic dependence of the polymerization rate on the ratio of su
rfactant components and to show that their mutual contribution to the maint
enance of the stability of the interfacial absorption layer of polymer-mono
mer particles is realized only at a certain ratio between PDS and E-30.
