This paper describes a conceptual model of recovery from mental illness dev
eloped to aid the state of Wisconsin in moving toward its goal of developin
g a "recovery-oriented" mental health system. Im the model, recovery refers
to both internal conditions experienced by persons who describe themselves
as being in recovery-hope, healing, empowerment, and connection-and extern
al conditions that facilitate recovery-implementation of the principle of h
uman lights, a positive culture of healing, and recovery-oriented services.
The aim of tile model is to link the abstract concepts that define recover
y with specific strategies that systems, agencies, and individuals can use
to facilitate it.
