The deterioration of the picture quality of displayed moving pictures cause
d by dynamic false contour artifacts is a serious impediment to obtaining g
ood picture quality on PDPs (plasma display panels). The artifacts arise fr
om the sub-field method used to represent the grayscale. We propose a combi
nation of two methods, time-compression of emission and weighted division o
f upper signal bits, to improve picture quality. Each technique has a separ
ate and important role in the improvement of quality. We also propose an ad
ditional technique for reducing the frequency with which the artifacts appe
ar. The proposed methods were evaluated br, computer simulation and subject
ive testing. The results showed that these methods significantly improved t
he moving picture quality of a PDP and provided a picture of acceptable qua
lity for viewing on an HDTV receiver. A high-quality 42-in.-diagonal PDP-HD
TV receiver, the "Nagano Model," was developed using the methods proposed.
