Abstract
Brachyspira (Serpulina) hyodysenteriae was isolated from 10 of 11 pigs with clinically suspected swine dysentery in six herds in northern Italy. All s trains were successfully isolated in the selective blood agar modified medi um with spectinomycin and rifampin (BAM-SR) currently used in our laborator y to isolate B. (S.) pilosicoli of human origin, after pre-treatment of int estinal material with spectinomycin and rifampin in foetal calf serum. Isol ates had phenotypic characteristics typical of B. (S.) hyodysenterine. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
