In an attempt to characterize additional structural classes that could
serve as prototypes for insecticides, 26 structurally diverse marine
compounds were examined for insecticidal activity in a diet overlay as
say against newly hatched larvae of the southern corn rootworm, Diabro
tica undecimpunctata howardi, and the tobacco budworm, Heliothis vires
cens. Several new classes of compounds have been identified as having
potential as lead compounds for the development of new marine-derived
insecticides.
