Abstract
A series of new optically active delta-lactones were synthesized as ch iral dopants for ferroelectric liquid crystals (FLCs). The response ti me of an FLC mixture containing 4 mol% pyrimidin-2-yl)-phenoxy]methyl- delta-valerolactone was 25 mus at 25-degrees-C. (0-90 per cent change in light transmission, 10 V mum-1). The synthesis and properties of th ese materials as practical chiral dopants are reported.
