Laser oscillation of Cr:forsterite was obtained with ruby laser pumpin
g to the lowest-lying levels of the T-3(1) band in Cr4+. Pump polariza
tion effects, temporal response, and broadband 220-nm tuning are repor
ted. Frequency doubling in potassium titanyl phosphate generate tunabl
e red-yellow light. This unconventional excitation scheme is of intere
st for potential high-energy output and for direct diode pumping. (C)
