Multi-slice systems represent a considerable advance in CT and will assure
the future of the technique for many years to come. This article describes
this new technology, indicating its provenance and its position in the evol
ution of CT. While it does not seek to be a physics and engineering text, e
nough detail of these are given to allow an informed discussion of the many
advantages and a few potential problems associated with the technology. A
discussion of a number of applications and a brief consideration of contras
t enhancement regimens and the possible need for their modification are pre
sented. (C) 2001 The Royal College of Radiologists.
