Atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease is the most important cause of morbi
dity and mortality in diabetic subjects. Abnormalities in circulating lipid
s and lipoproteins are considered to be important risk factors for cardiova
scular disease because they occur with increased frequency in diabetic indi
viduals. Because reversal of these abnormalities carries the potential for
preventing or ameliorating cardiovascular disease, their identification and
management with other cardiovascular disease risk factors deserve equal im
portance to the management of hyperglycemia and frequently are complementar
y to it.
