Chemically structured surfaces are discussed which consist of patterns of l
yophilic and lyophobic surface domains. Wetting layers on top of these surf
aces attain a variety of morphologies and undergo morphological wetting tra
nsitions. One convenient way to explore these transitions experimentally is
by changing the total volume of the wetting layer. (C) 2001 Elsevier Scien
