Abstract
To determine the relationship between the glycaemic response to food a nd satiety, the effects of three treatments (shredded wheat (SW) + glu cose (glu), SW + fructose (fru), and water) on blood glucose and food intake, measured over two separate time periods (30 and 120 minutes), were studied in 13 normal weight, non-diabetic males. Blood glucose co ncentrations were affected by treatment (SW + glu > SW + fru > water; p < 0.05) at t = 15 and 30 during the 30 min sessions, and at t = 15, 30, 45, and 60 during the 120 min sessions. At t = 90 and 120, SW + gl u > water = SW + fru. Energy intakes 30 min and 120 min after treatmen t were lower after both SW treatments than when water alone was consum ed (p < 0.05), but there was no difference between the SW treatments. Total energy intake (preload + meal) did not differ between treatments in the 30 min session, however in the 120 min session the SW + glu tr eatment resulted in total energy intake greater than water alone. No r elationship was found between the effects of treatment on glycaemic re sponse and satiety. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science Inc.
