This work presents a novel advanced methodology to accurately predict the e
arth leakage currents for analyzing the electrification railway systems wit
h drain auto-transformers. The proposed methodology entails applying a deco
upled technique to model the equivalent circuit while simultaneously consid
ering the grounding network and the effects on mutual impedance between fee
ders. Also presented herein are several study cases, particularly with resp
ect to how grounding resistance, span of auto-transformers, turn-ratio of a
uto-transformers, and location of ground faults influence the leakage curre
nts. These study cases demonstrate that the computer program based on the p
roposed methodology can effectively analyze the leakage currents in the pla
nning stage for developing railway systems.
