In order to achieve world-class performance, more and more companies are re
placing their reactive, fire-fighting strategies for maintenance with proac
tive strategies like preventive and predictive maintenance and aggressive s
trategies like total productive maintenance (TPM). While these newer mainte
nance strategies require increased commitments to training, resources and i
ntegration, they also promise to improve performance. This paper reports th
e results of a study of the relationship between maintenance strategies and
performance. Based on the responses from a survey of plant managers and ma
intenance managers, the analysis shows strong positive relationships betwee
n proactive and aggressive maintenance strategies and performance. (C) 2001
