A simple extension of the Needleman and Wunsch algorithm for aligning pairs
of protein sequences allows it to be used for the efficient generation of
very large multiple-sequence alignments whose members are similar. This tec
hnique could have applications in a broad range of high-volume genomics pro
jects.
